Bangkok's bustling night markets

Bangkok's bustling night markets

It's been a long while (and I mean years) since I last wrote a post on this blog. And what better way to get things jigged up again by writing something about a topic that nearly most of you have been asking about.

The Thai capital has near-endless options when it comes to clothes shopping. Nearly every Bangkok district boasts of a neighbourhood clothing market, ask any Thai and they're likely to suggest their local market as their favourite. So fret not if your Thai friend's recommendations are not on this list, this is by no means exhaustive but a good place to start when exploring clothing markets that reflect Thai fashion trends.

Want to avoid the crowds and other tourists? Here’s a list of other budget clothing markets in Bangkok.

BOBAE MARKET

Bobae Market is undoubtedly one of the most popular wholesale garment markets. This 30 year-old market in Bangkok sources clothing and garments from all over the world mainly China but a majority of the garments are locally produced. Many wholesalers from around Southeast Asia buy their stocks of clothing from Bobae market. With more than 700 stalls and shops that have all types of clothes, including t-shirts, shirts, dress shirts, skirts, bags, jeans, no wonder it's one of the most important Bangkok wholesale garment markets. As it is a wholesale market, the bigger the bulk you buy, the cheaper it gets. Note that this is a day and a night market, but for better deals try the early morning trade.

Address: 488 Damrongrak Road | Bobae Tower, Bangkok 10100, Thailand

Top tip: For unbeatable deals, go for the early morning trade from 3:00 to 5:00am

PRATUNAM MARKET

The Bangkok neighbourhood of Pratunam is ground zero for wholesale clothing! Clothes, shoes and fashion accessories are available in the largest wholesale market in Bangkok. It's the scale, variety, and style that Pratunam market has become my absolute personal favourite for wholesale clothing. Many shops offer big discounts especially for bulk and reportedly, some of them are even selling at the same price as their purchase. It is an open-air clothing market and displays pretty much every kind of clothes including the T- shirts, skirts, formal suits, winter jackets, fancy dresses as well as embroidered costumes. It is also known for its wholesale morning market.

Address: Intersection of Ratchaprop and Petchburi roads to Ratchaprararop Soi 3.

Top tip: Opens 24 hours (for wholesalers get the best bargains in the early morning before 10:00am)

CHATUCHAK MARKET

The biggest outdoor market in Bangkok’s Chatuchak neighbourhood selling pretty much everything. I mean, everything. Shame really that this market is only open on weekends. But I suppose that's where its novelty comes from. They've really dialled up the scarcity principle here, the less accessible the market is, the more it makes you want to go!

Wholesalers, as this is open only on weekend, plan your trip accordingly. With the scale and breadth of clothing options available, it's easy to understand why this is the best wholesale garments market in Bangkok.

Wholesaler can get every type and kind of ready to wear clothing and stunning garments at very cheap prices. Not all items are stylish, but who am I to talk about what's fashionable and what's not? Some are definitely quirky. Means you can get pretty much any style and design. When it comes to bulk purchases, some older stock are sold at bargain prices. Bangkok’s Chatuchak weekend market presents an astounding array of shoes, dresses from casual to semi-casual, plants, seeds, utensils, crockery, a few electronic items and plastic wares.

Opening hours: Saturdays- Sundays, 06:00 – 18:00, On Fridays, 22:00 – 05:00. Plants and flowers are open on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 06:00 – 18:00.

Address: Kamphaeng Phet Road | Lat Yao, Chatuchak, Bangkok 10900, Thailand

PLATINUM MALL

Platinum Mall is a six-storey shopping complex, probably the most popular and trendiest of all wholesale shopping markets. It specialises in wholesale fashion clothing and accessories all packed in its 1,500 shops. Haggling is part of the fun, and haggle you should! You’ll save more buying in larger quantities.

If you come to Platinum Market, it's easier to navigate through the endless myriad of stores. Unlike many shopping complexes where it's easy to get lost, Platinum Mall is fairly well-marked with signaes. However, there is not much of a planned concept here. In all 6 floors, you can go to each and they all have a fairly even mix of men's and women's clothing.

The range of styles and availability is even more impressive. Find everything from children’s wear, teen's clothing, jeans, casual and evening dresses, underwear, oversized clothing to accessories like wigs, belts, shoes, handbags, hats and cosmetics. There are plenty of speciality shops here too, with imported clothing and accessories from South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, China, India, as well as plus size clothing, fashion for the older generation (OK, boomer), summer dresses, costumes, and more.

If you can imagine it, Platinum Mall most likely will have it!

SAMPAENG MARKET

Located in Bangkok’s Chinatown, Sampeng Market sums up the whole shopping experience of Chinatown and the surrounding Old City. Imagine very busy and crowded streets during the day that often become even more chaotic as night time approaches. Get ready to be faced with non-stop pedestrian traffic, worn-out carts, and the occasional truck bringing in fresh produce from the provinces all the way down to this part of Bangkok.

This is Sampeng Market and so much more. It’s one of the cheapest places for clothes shopping in Bangkok – take advantage of impressive discounts when you buy in bulk (i.e 10 or more items). Be on the look out for some of the most popular items, including dresses, silk sarongs, jewellery, women’s shoes, home decors, handicrafts, and many more.

KRUNG THONG PLAZA

Krung Thong Plaza sits across Platinum Mall and whilst it doesn't have the same trendy vibe as its neighbour, this wholesale clothing market boasts floors and floors of commercial space dedicated to wholesale clothing.

This wholesale shopping haven is great for plus size clothing for men and women. It's strongly building a reputation as the place for plus size clothing so if this is your target market, then look no further. They can even give you wholesale prices when you just buy two!

There is footbridge that connects Krung Thong Plaza to Platinum Mall so I suggest starts at Krung Thong Plaza for the bargains, then make your way to Platinum Mall for the trends.
