Top 4 Wholesale Shopping Markets in Bangkok in 2015

Bangkok's Khao San Road at night

OK, so you’re brave and lucky enough to have time, money and the energy to come, explore and take full advantage of the wholesale shopping venues in Bangkok. If you are looking for locally made RTWs to handicrafts, Bangkok is never known to disappoint. As we come towards the end of 2014, we have gathered a short list of the best places to shop wholesale for your retail business in 2015. While some are well-known, others perhaps, are relatively unheard of by most foreigners. So here’s a list of what I consider the top places for wholesale shopping in Bangkok in 2015.

  1. Sampeng Market

  2. Chatuchak Weekend Market

  3. Saphan Phut Night Market

  4. Pratunam Market

Sampeng Market

Sampeng Market is well-placed in the busiest location of Bangkok’s Chinatown, which is known as Yaowarat. It is well known for its Thai food delicacy and a wide array of wholesale shopping stores with fabulous shopping collections. Sampeng Market has almost every product – an endless sprawl of trinkets, fabrics, clothing, jewelry and much more at cheaper prices. If you are buying in bulk to resell or want those 50 sarongs for presents then this is the place to buy. Sampeng Market is often jam packed with excited shoppers, transport dollies and street food hawkers, all busying past the aisles that are usually very narrow. These sois are not for the claustrophobic (or agoraphobic), if you are shopping in this market keep in mind that the crowded sois are a given. On the other hand, there are food shops which are air-conditioned. If you expect a market with non-stop hustle and bustle (and hopefully, able to get what you came here for), then the experience could be all worth it.

-How to get there: Take the BTS Silom Line and get off at Saphan Taksin station. Then take the river boat to Ratchawong Pier and from there Sampeng market is just a five minute walk. Another way is to take the BTS Skytrain to National Stadium station then take Bus No. 73.

Chatuchak Weekend Market

Within the district of Chatuchak lies Chatuchak Market, Thailand’s most famous weekend shopping market. With over 8000 stalls, this is easily the largest weekend market in Thailand.

Saphan Phut Night Market

Saphan Phut night market may not be a huge tourist attraction but if you are on a budget and prefer second-hand goods then you have come to the right place. This night market sets up shop from 6pm every evening to sometime until around midnight. Its hugely popular for cheap clothing and is a destination for local teen shoppers and university students bent on stretching the Baht as far as it can go. While this area is very famous for clothing, there are other good finds such as second-hand items, vintage tat, and independent artists ready to sketch to your heart’s desire.

-How to get there: The Saphan Phut night market is adjacent to Memorial Bridge (Saphan Phut), at the intersection of Maharat and Chakraphat Roads. Take the BTS Sky Train to Saphan Thaksin Station and walk towards the Chao Phraya River then take the river boat to Memorial Bridge Pier. Another way is to take the BTS Sky Train to National Stadium Station and take Bus No. 73 or taxi.

Pratunam Market

Pratunam Market is in the heart of central Bangkok in the district of Pratunam. Located on the busiest part of the city, Pratunam market has earned a reputation as ground zero for wholesale shopping.

As the year draws to an end, expect this time of the year to be the busiest. But despite the humidity, the hot weather and all the shopping brouhaha, here’s hoping that at the end of the day, you can say without hesitation that the experience has all been worth it.
